By offering this award, we aim to ease the financial burden of higher education and encourage meaningful discussions on substance use and recovery. Binge drinking and substance use are unfortunately common in college and often seen as a normal part of student life. However, they can lead to serious health risks such as alcohol poisoning and overdose. Should universities take stronger action – through policies, education, or sober events – to reduce harm, or is it up to students to make responsible choices?

Contest Rules

- Contestants must be enrolled in a four-year university or community college and pursuing a major in psychology, social work, counseling, addiction studies, or in a related field. Proof of enrollment and declared major may be required.
- Winners grant New Spirit Detox Center the right to use their essay content for contest promotion, marketing, and publication, including the use of winners’ names and identifying details.
- Only essays submitted by the deadline will be judged; late entries will not be accepted or reviewed.
- Scholarship awards may be revoked if an entrant is later found ineligible or violates contest rules.
- Any federal, state, or local taxes on prizes are the responsibility of the winners.
- All submitted essays become the property of New Spirit Detox Center and may be used or reproduced.
